ifolor Designer: Errors in Accessing the Program or Project Files

Which programs can negatively influence accessing the ifolor Designer or the software’s project files?

Don’t let error messages prevent you from designing your photo products. If you run into problems while trying to install the ifolor Designer or accessing files, this often results from insufficient user permissions or other software installed on your computer, such as anti-virus scanners.

The ifolor Designer uses the directory C:\Users\...\Documents\ifolor\Designer as the standard storage area for photo books as well as local user data. The program files, as regulated by windows, are saved in the directory C:\ProgramData\ifolor.

Even if you don’t have administrator privileges on your computer, the ifolor Designer should be able to access both of these directories. It can of course occur, however, that your user privileges could be limited for individual folders. You can check this by looking at the respective folder’s properties in the folder itself or the file directory. You can open this by right clicking on the element you would like to inspect and then choosing “Properties.” In the third tab, “Security,” you can find the permissions.

It’s much more often the case, however, that access restrictions are caused by third-party software. We are currently aware that the following programs can prevent accessing the ifolor Designer or your project files:

  • HitmanPro Alert
  • Bitdefender Total Security
  • Bitdefender Internet Security
  • Panda Security

By using “Bitdefender Total Security 2016” as an example, we’ll show you which error messages can appear and what you can do in order to fully access the ifolor Designer.

In the ifolor Designer you might run into this error message in various places:

«An exception has occurred»

::: System.UnauthorizedAccessException :::

«Access to the path 'C:\Users\...\Documents\ifolor\Designer\... Data\ProjectSettings.xml' is denied.»

In Bitdefender, the so-called “ransomware protection” is responsible for the limited access to the Windows user directories.

You can turn this setting off. In order to do this, go to Modules → Ransomware Protection → Protection at boot «deactivate».

After restarting your computer, the ifolor Designer should be able to run without any restrictions or error messages.

Tip: Alternatively, in many anti-virus programs you have the option to add the ifolor Designer as a trusted application.

Note: We’re unfortunately unable to provide a detailed solution for every kind of third-party software since these are constantly changing due to updates and each individual program offers many different settings. Please contact customer service for further assistance.
